Portuguese Bean Soup
Since moving to Utah I've had to use smoked sausage to substitute for not having the best sausage ever PORTUGUESE SAUSAGE. Well, with my recent trip home I was able to bring back 5 Portuguese sausage...HOLD ON HAWAIIANS IN UTAH...DON'T BE BREAKING DOWN MY DOOR! THAT'S MY GOLD!
Anyways I promised Sarah & Wes I would make them my soup with the REAL sausage before they move. Well....I use Ham SHANKS instead of Ham HOCKS in my soup and it's gotta be Ham SHANKS. GOTTA! Can you tell I'm passionate about this soup. I always find my ham shanks at Maceys in Provo and the darn place no moa all week. Drive me crazy! So now I have to think about my soup and CRAVE it everyday even though I have the GOLD. The meat dept said they should have some by this weekend.
There's different variations to the recipe. I DON'T PUT macaroni and carrots in mine. However, I plan on putting carrots this next time. I WILL NOT EVER PUT MACARONI in mine....I told you I'm passionate about my soup. Something about the texture of macaroni in my bean soup just doesn't go right for me. My recipe is extremely low key on the ingredients, so you can find other recipes if you google it.
3 Ham Shanks (everyone else puts Ham Hocks)
1 Large Portuguese Sausage ( you can substitute Linguisa or just any smoked sausage, but Hawaiians would say it's just not the same)
2 cans Kidney Beans (I'm too impatient to deal with the real stuff)
2-3 medium potatoes
1 round onion
cabbage (I haven't heard of anyone else putting this in theirs...our ohana luvs it)
garlic
tomato sauce
Hawaiian salt (or regular salt)
pepper
